As a ladies choir, the Westbourne Singers was formed for a specific Church event in 1976, but such was the enthusiasm and enjoyment generated, the ladies decided to continue and in so doing aim to raise funds for local charities. Under the direction of the late Mr. Norman Kidd the choir continued successfully and in 1984 Mrs. Doreen Bown, Head of Music at Pensby Girls School became the Musical Director.
In 1991 Mr. John McBride, Church Organist, became the Accompanist for the choir and his sudden death in 2006 was a great loss. We are fortunate that Mrs. Elizabeth Smith was able to take over that role.
The Westbourne Singers is well recognised and continues to raise many thousand pounds for local charities. We have 40 members from across Wirral with two of our founder members, Mrs. Olive Spraggett and Mrs. Lena Williams, still with the choir.
Engagements have increased from two official concerts per year to include requests such as Thanksgiving Services, Weddings and Charity Concerts. We have a wide-ranging repertoire including songs from West End musicals, through Negro spirituals to more classical pieces. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings.
